*If unfamiliar with Femarctic Castes, please see this post.
Early in the crafting of Femitokon I asked myself, what scares a species that can see in the dark? What worries a species that’s impervious to disease? From a human perspective, the Femmar can withstand any bullet or knife due to their thick hides, they can remain submerged for over an hour, and this species lives under the bedrock – beneath glaciers, but the equator doesn’t weaken them in any way. There are so few things on the planet that can truly hurt a 23rd century Femmar outside of natural causes, so I created something within their own physicality, to hurt them.
Psychologically, I chose to make them susceptible to loneliness. Loneliness is a condition humans struggle with, but many humans are capable of being alone with limited diminished mental capacity; the Femmar cannot take being alone; it’s debilitating to a species that does everything in groups.
ISOLATION (the institution)
Isolation is the result of legal social rejection imposed upon those citizens that violate laws set down by the Ramaxi P’uxial (primary citizenry-law) not to be confused with the Ramaxi L’uxial (moral laws – not all of which are legislated).
Upon being brought before a Prime-Advocate of the Guardia Committee, a citizen found guilty of a serious crime (the most common being murder, or the unintended taking of a life whilst committing a crime) is then separated from the citizenry for the rest of her natural life. When one is sentenced to Isolation, she’s given opportunity to self-terminate. Now, depending on the offense, genetic recycle is allowed, but if her crime is severe enough, her genes are barred from reentering the gene pool. Convicted citizens then go to an Isolation-Station called, ISO-Main.
Built by the Second Ramaxian Gen, ISO-Main is located on the sea-floor of the Arctic Basin, and each of its 2000 rooms (120 square foot per room) contains a toilet, a shower, a mat for hibernating, and (as of 2200), a sustenance unit. The isolated have no contact with any other citizen in the facility, they are allowed no communicators, reading material, or anything to help pass the time–they are isolated not only from the citizenry, but from all things Femarctic.
During the era of the Second, Fifth, and Sixth Gens, ISO-Main remained empty, due to the willingness of those convicted to self-terminate before entry. When the Ninth Gen entered maturity, the first prisoners entered ISO-Main*.
*A healthy generation of Femmar dread the idea of being isolated from their own kind so much, many elder Gens were willing to suicide out before being taken to the North Pole. Due to a host of socio-psychological issues brought on by their production and their subsequent rearing, the Ninth Ramaxian Gen aren’t the sort to take their own lives.
Physically (this was tough, considering they genetically engineer themselves, and get better with each new generation) I had to be careful in how I developed afflictions…
DISEASES AND DISORDERS
The Femmar are subject to disabilities, disorders, and syndromes. Due to their prowess in genetic engineering, each Gen is better off than the one before it, and many conditions become eradicated over time. Common ailments that remain are often age related syndromes, stubborn genetic anomalies, or caste-specific disabilities:
I listed here some of the ailments displayed or mentioned in the series, from the series bible –
Hizaxikogatix is the condition of color-blindness that exists in every member of the Hizak-caste. Attempts to repair the damaged chromosome responsible for Hizaxikogatix have resulted in those Hizakidoe treated, being born blind. Other side effects stemming from gene-therapy enlisted to eliminate the condition have led to coordination failure in newborn Hizakidoe.
Fematcolx is a genetic condition found only in the lungs of the Subaki. Subaki lungs contain the smallest alveoli of any caste, and those born with fematcolx have even smaller alveoli. Over eighty-percent of Subaki are born with fematcolx, making them prone to systemic fematicolixa (hyperoxia in humans), a condition inherited from the ancient Femati. Fematicolixa is form oxygen intoxication affecting those Subaki born with fematcolx; if they remain on the surface of Ramaxia for more than twenty-two hours, they experience complete respiratory failure.
Attempts at genetically engineering Subaki with the robust lungs found in Zaxiri have resulted in central-nervous-system failure, in newborn Subakidoe.
- In 2210, CR Velto Wram of East Toxis pushed through legislation to develop the Yikat Vaccine, named for Yikat Julo, the Subak donation birthed by Wram’s bond-partner Ilo Cux, for Subak celebrity Yam Julo. Newborn Yikat died from fematicolixa, only two weeks after arriving to live with her new pod in the surface center of Antarctica City. The vaccine, Yikat-I, enters the lungs and remains dormant until the Subaki goes to the surface; when large amounts of oxygen are taken in, the vaccine enables the malformed alveoli to expand and contract.
Eleventh-Gen Subakidoe born in the second birthing season of 2211 were all inoculated with Yikat-I, and this has allowed a significant portion of that Gen’s Subak to acquire positions in Surface Operational, and to serve on bases between the poles. In 2225, the Prime Lab, to treat elder Subaki, successfully developed a congenital vaccine called Yikat II. At this time, only forty-percent of elder Subak have chosen to receive the vaccine—many of them of the Tenth Generation.
Bizrudap is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that still strikes late-age Bizaki born with a single-lobe rudapx (thyroid). It is an autonomic system disorder, which disrupts normal femastasis (homeostasis among the helovx); those elder Bizaki with onset bizrudap will stop hibernating on or around their seventieth year. This lack of sleep leads to episodes of unbridled energy, and bouts of constant energy bring on a state of nervous dementia. Elder Bizaki with bizrudap are unable to stop moving, thinking, and talking—they push themselves to the point of physical exhaustion, and eventually, death.
Gene therapy during the development of the Tenth Ramaxian Generation made Bizaki born with single-lobe rudapx, obsolete. Signs of transitional-rudap (a thinning of the central membrane connecting the lobes of the rudapx) became present in Tenth Gen Bizaki when they reached the age of sixteen. Estimates out of the Prime Lab indicate that Tenth Gen Bizaki living past age seventy will suffer from hibernation issues—but not full on bizrudap.
Advances in gene therapy have led to the Bizaki of the Eleventh Ramaxian Gen to be born with stronger dual-lobe rudapx; there were no signs of transitional-rudap when this gen reached their sixteenth year.
Huzkutx is a physical condition brought on by a failure of the Kermadux Gland to release the protein kutx, needed to produce sluzsh, an arousal hormone necessary for genital response. It is a physical condition with no preset means of genetic determination—it does not affect Subaki or Zaxiri, as neither of those castes have a Kermadux Gland.
Sluzsh remains naturally dormant in the guzshlix of Subaki and Zaxiri, until their bodies and minds are sexual stimulated, where it works to transition blood into the tissues of the gashcol. In Marixi, Hizaki, and Bizaki, production of sluzsh follows the release of kutx into the bloodstream; this happens only when their bodies and minds are sexually stimulated–when stricken with huzkutx, swelling and lubrication of the gaschol are not possible.
There is no reversing the condition of huzkutx; it remains until the citizen recycles. Those suffering from the condition, pejoratively referred to as ‘husks’, or ‘being a husk’, face stigma. Psychoanalytical counseling is required, and physical therapy includes the therapeutic use of gashcol-pumps, and artificial lubricants, to achieve arousal and subsequent climax.
Huzkutx is not Huzapx, a stress/fatigue induced loss of arousal that temporarily affects Hizaki, Bizaki, or Marixi.
Huzkutx is not Donapx, the decade-long absence of arousal that occurs naturally in Subaki, while in the constant presence of donational age Femmar. Donapx is a hormonal reaction that fades within the Subak, a year after the donations absence from the home.
Ilitux, (not to be confused with konkilitux) is a common mutation that developed first in the brains of some Fifth Gen Marixi produced from the patches of Hizaki citizens. Marixidoe born with ilitux are revered by Femarctic society because they’re a warrior-caste citizen, capable of empathizing with the citizenry.
When developed from the patch of a Hizaki, a young Marixidoe is often born with the basolateral nuclei of the amygdala malformed, fear-response remains heightened, but a distinct responsiveness develops toward those weaker. Marixidoe born with ilitux aren’t any different from those born without it—until they reach the age of thirteen, and display overt altruistic behavior that warrants separation from their caste.
Konkilitux is a rare recessive genetic disorder that occurs only in a tiny section of the population, those citizens directly descended from original subjects Femitokon, Fusofitakil, Uymras, Wramtol, and Bantol’x. It occurs when a zygote evolves with a mutation of the chromosome responsible for the development of the brain; donations are born with calcification on the temporal lobes, affecting the amygdala, which is responsible for the processing of memory, decision-making, and emotional reaction.
Subaki and Zaxiri suffering from konkilitux are prone to hyper-aggressive behavior, or irregular paranoia. Other castes stricken by the disorder cannot grasp moral responsibility, while others are unable to exhibit social conscience. Marixi sufferers develop an inability to learn and then display, a proper fear response.
A citizen with konkilitux is rare due to better trained members of the Zaxiri College, and their blind-patch combination choices being monitored and approved by hive Oligax; the condition exists in the 23rd century only due to the natural selection choices of those connected to the Houses of Kul, Banto, Uym, and Clan Wram.
